In Sutu was established in2023 out from the urgent need to explore how art can address the pressing challenges of an uncertain world. While humanity has faced critical moments throughout history, the present crisis is distinguished by disturbing factors: environmental destruction, the legitimization of powerful elites, the erosion of post-war social cohesion and democracy, and the rise of authoritarianism through technology. These issues unfold in an environment marked by growing cruelty towards both humans and other forms of life.
Rather than simply confirming this grim reality or assigning blame, our aim is to offer a new perspective—one that opens a small crack in the dense fog of despair. We recognize that different historical contexts assign different roles of art. Our initiative calls for expanding our awareness, making visible ideas and phenomena beyond the scope of our anthropocentric viewpoints. Sometimes this effort is driven by optimism; at other times, it embraces melancholy—an emotion that is not only natural but can also serve as a catalyst for change.
The human spirit has been deeply affected by leadersa nd algorithms that exploit our base instincts. In response, In Sutu seeks to leverage the power of images, sounds, and textures to channel our attitudes towards alternative perspectives, sensibilities, and aspirations. The language of art, we believe, should be accessible to all, not just an elite few. While it does not claim moral superiority for artists, it acknowledges that art can offer coherence amidst chaos, clarity within confusion, and challenges the reductionist logic of the technological culture that dominates today.
The name "In Sutu," inspired byanthropologist Elizabeth Povinelli, emphasizes the concept of interweaving—where all things are interconnected—contrasting this with "InSitu," which suggests isolated objects placed in specific spaces. In Sutu envisions existence as a dynamic web, where everything is intertwined and interdependent.
